Audience Theory
Uses and Gratifications- Blumer and Katz, Denis Mcquail
Denis Mcquail (1972) discussed four theoretical audience pleasures:
- Surveillance – our need to know what is going on in the world. The News/ Documentary
- Personal relationships – our need for to interact with other people. Sports/ Reality TV/Dramas
- Personal identity – our need to define our identity and sense of self. fashion programmes/Soap operas
- Diversion – the need for escapism, entertainment and relaxation. Superhero programmes
Overall, section 4 needs much more detail. There are some incomplete posts (BARB/RAJAR/NRS) and others are missing:
ReplyDelete•Define audience terminology, i.e. mass/mainstream, niche - needs of mainstream and niche audiences
• Explain demographic profiles of audiences for media products, i.e.:
age, gender, ethnic group, location and, socioeconomic, sexual orientation, lifestyle and psychographics – we looked at all the different tables
•For BARB etc these are the questions you need to answer:

Which industries does your company provide audience research for?
How does it conduct audience research? Give examples of its methods.
What audience demographics (categories) are included?
Give an example of one of the company’s most popular products based on your
